IV sedation is a moderate form of sedation, and is generally only used for more major surgical procedures. You won’t often find other dentists in San Antonio that offer IV sedation, but we believe our patients deserve the best, and we want to help them achieve their oral health goals in a way that’s relaxed and comfortable.
IV sedation means you will receive the sedative intravenously, which means you will feel the effects more quickly than other types of sedation to help you relax. IV sedation is moderate sedation, which means you may stay relatively awake and able to respond to the doctor, but may not remember the details of the appointment. You might also relax enough to fall asleep, but can be easily awakened.
With IV sedation, you have nothing to fear. Your doctor will be sure to thoroughly explain all the details prior to your procedure so you understand what will happen. We will be sure to address any questions or concerns you may have. With IV sedation, you will need to arrange for transportation to and from your appointment, as you will not be able to drive yourself home.
Oral sedation is the most common form of sedation dentistry, and comes in the form of a prescription pill you take before your appointment. The effects will take a bit longer to take hold than with IV sedation. Oral sedation, depending on the dosage, can range from minimal to moderate sedation, meaning you will remain conscious and able to respond to the doctor, but may not remember much of the appointment. Some patients find sedation relaxing enough to fall asleep entirely, but can still be awakened easily with a gentle shake. You will need to arrange for transportation to and from your appointment.
If you experience any type of dental anxiety that prevents you from seeking the oral healthcare you need, you may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. If you’re unsure, here are some of the most common reasons our patients seek sedation:
